Weight Watchers Hythe talk by Jane MackenzieI was delighted to be asked by Weight Watchers Hythe Coach Amanda Heaps to speak to the group this morning about the benefits of exercise and specifically Pilates.

We started with sitting correctly and contracting the abdominals and how to engage their pelvic floor. The group carried on with this while I explained why it would be really beneficial for them to take up Pilates. I explained a little about myself and talked about the way Pilates can help with posture, core strength, mobility and well-being. I gave an example of someone with poor posture and asked how that person might feel. The group replied with things like ‘old’, ‘low self-esteem’, ‘unhappy’ etc.

Why Pilates is beneficial for everyday life

Pilates helps with improving walking, standing, working, gardening (any activity you take part in) and sports through:

  • Increasing muscular balance and strength
  • Improving posture and mobility
  • Improving core and back strength
  • Enhancing well-being (mindfulness and social)

I explained how Pilates attracts all types of people, from those who are unfit, older people, different generations, husbands and wives, sports people, fitness people and people with back aches and pains. Everyone works at their own level, so there is no completion, and everyone improves their health and well-being through Pilates at their own rate. In no other form of exercise I have taught in the last 27 years, have I seen such positive improvements. For some this was even after just one session!

I then went onto answer questions and talk to the Weight Watchers Hythe group after the session. Hopefully in the short time I had I was able to share my passion for Pilates and encourage them to take that first wonderful step!
