Pilates Videos: Relief from Sciatica – Piriformis

Are you in need of relief from Sciatica? Sciatica is pain caused by compression of the long nerve running from the pelvis down the back of the legs – the sciatic nerve. Read more about Sciatica on NHS Choices. Sciatic pain can usually be felt in the legs or buttocks.

There are several causes of sciatica, one of which is tightness of a muscle called the piriformis. Your piriformis muscles lie deep in your buttocks, and connect your spine to your thigh bones (femur). As they pass over your sciatic nerves, tightness in these muscles can compress or irritate them, causing sciatica. Sciatica caused by tight pitiformis muscles is known as Piriformis Syndrome.

I have spoken during our Pilates classes about relief from Sciatica quite a bit recently, as there are several of my participants who suffer from Sciatica or Piriformis syndrome.

If you suffer from sciatica, and are hoping for some relief from sciatica, stretching your piriformis muscle may well help. There are some excellent exercises to gently stretch these muscles, so why not take look at the video below.
